Highlights of Our Week!
The Geckos were filmed in their makerspace class! Ask your Gecko about the challenge that Mrs. Jurewicz gave them.
We are preparing something special for the Odyssey. Ask your child about this project, which will hang in our hallway once it’s completed. And don’t forget to come to the Odyssey!
Language Arts
We are having fun with figurative language! After several activities about simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification, onomatopoeia, alliteration, and idiom, all the Geckos tried writing their own — except for idioms. These examples are on a bulletin board outside our classroom. You can see it here:
In our novel study of Out of My Mind, students analyzed the perspectives of four characters in a key chapter and then picked one of the characters and rewrote the events from that character’s viewpoint. It was really fun to read these different takes on the chapter!
We got the most complicated grammar sentence of the year so far: a compound sentence with four conjunctions! Ask your child about the diagram for this.
Math
Students explored fractions, decimals, and percents this week. They practiced turning fractions into decimals and then into percents using their calculators. We have just begun looking at graphs that use percents.
Social Studies
All of our colonists have finished writing a brief report on their trade or profession and have started designing a shop sign. Next week we hope to get our town up and running! We also plan to begin the writing project that accompanies this unit. More about that next week! Here are a few students hard at work on their signs, which will be hung in the 4th grade classrooms.
